Cake smash photography sessions have become increasingly popular in recent years. It's a fun and playful way to celebrate your child's first birthday while capturing some adorable photos to cherish for years to come. In this blog post, we'll explore what a cake smash photography session is, how to prepare for one, and what to expect during the session.
What is a cake smash photography session?
A cake smash photography session is a photoshoot that typically takes place when a child turns one year old, but can be done for any age! It involves setting up a colorful and playful scene with a coordinating cake as the centerpiece. During the session, your child will have fun smashing and eating the cake while I capture the excitement with my camera. The resulting photos are adorable and full of personality! After smashing the cake, we'll usually have a "splash session" where the baby will get to play in an adorable, toddler sized claw foot bathtub. The splash session usually produces the biggest, best smiles and helps clean all the cake off your child at the same time!
Planning a cake smash photography session?
To prepare for a cake smash photography session, there are a few things you should keep in mind. First, choose a theme for the photoshoot. This can be anything from a specific color scheme to a favorite cartoon character. When a client books with me without a specific theme in mind, I will send out a questionnaire filled with questions that will help me get to know your family and your child so that I can help create the perfect theme or set up for you. Whether you want an elaborate themed set up, or a neutral backdrop with some balloons, I can make your vision come to life with absolutely stunning, sharp, professional quality portraits capturing this exciting milestone for your child and family. All packages include use of my studio wardrobe along with a smash cake, so you don't need to worry about packing anything for your session aside from your child and a towel!
Your Cake Smash Photography session
On the day of the photoshoot, make sure your child is well-rested and fed before the session. You may want to bring some of your child's favorite toys to help keep them calm and engaged during the session. It is a great idea to bring along puffs, or similar bite sized snacks that your child enjoys in case they do not care for the cake. During the session, I will guide your child through the session, encouraging them to play and interact with the cake. I have plenty of tricks up my sleeve to get genuine smiles out of little ones!
As a parent, your role during the session is to be supportive and encouraging. You can help guide your child through the session by talking to them and offering positive reinforcement. Most importantly, have fun and enjoy the moment!
