When to Book Your Newborn Photographer (and How to Make Sure You Don’t Miss Out)

Those last few weeks of pregnancy feel like they’re both flying by and standing still, don’t they? Between washing the tiniest clothes, prepping the nursery, and trying to get comfortable enough to sleep, you’re probably also starting to think about newborn photos and wondering when you actually need to book them.

You’ve likely seen friends post their gorgeous newborn portraits and thought, “I’d love photos like that!” But with everything going on, it’s easy for time to slip away. So let’s make sure you don’t miss that perfect window.

Here’s what you need to know about when to book your newborn photographer, why timing matters, and how to prepare so your session feels calm, natural, and stress-free.

When Should You Book?

The best time to book your newborn photographer is during your second or early third trimester, ideally between 28 and 34 weeks pregnant.

Why so early? Most newborn photographers (myself included!) only take a limited number of due dates each month to allow for flexibility when babies decide to make their entrance a little early or a little late.

Booking ahead guarantees that your session is reserved, and your photographer can tentatively hold space for you around your due date. Once baby arrives, you’ll touch base to confirm your session date within those precious first couple of weeks.

Why Timing Matters

Those dreamy, sleepy newborn photos you see with the snuggly poses, the tiny hands tucked under their chin, and swaddled up  are best captured within the first 7 to 21 days after birth.

During this time, babies are still in that cozy stage and tend to sleep deeply between feeds, which allows for a calm, relaxed session. As babies get a bit older beyond those first 2-3 weeks, they start to become more alert and curious (which is adorable in it's own way, but definitely a different vibe).

That said, if your baby is a few weeks old, don’t stress. I photograph babies of all ages, and beautiful images are always possible. We’ll simply adjust the flow to fit your baby’s comfort level and sleepiness.

Studio Newborn Photography or In-Home Newborn Photography: Choosing What Feels Right for You

When planning your session, you’ll also want to think about where you’d like your photos taken.

If you love soft wraps, dreamy textures, and the more classic photography with the ease of arriving to a cozy, prepared setup, a studio newborn session might be your best fit.

If you prefer a more relaxed, documentary feel where you can stay home in your own space, an in-home newborn session creates a wonderful, personal story of those first days together.

Both options result in timeless, love-filled images it’s really about what feels most natural for your family and what suits you.

What to Look For in a Newborn Photographer

Your baby’s safety and comfort are everything. When choosing a photographer, look for someone who:

  • Specializes in newborn photography and understands baby-led posing
  • Has training in newborn safety and experience handling babies
  • Uses clean, sanitized wraps and props
  • Offers editing that feels timeless and true to life
  • Creates an environment that’s calm, patient, and never rushed

PS - you've found all these things in me!! :)

If you’re searching for a Brantford newborn photographer who serves Hamilton, Cambridge, Caledonia, Woodstock, and surrounding areas, I’d love to connect and walk you through what to expect.

How to Prepare for Your Session

A few simple steps make a big difference in how smooth your session feels:

  • Give baby a bath in the morning so they are nice and fresh. Give baby a good feeding before heading out and ensure you have enough for an extra hungry baby as they sometimes experience more hunger than usual during a newborn session because they aren't necessarily sleeping as deeply as they would at home. A full baby is a happy baby, and a happy baby is a sleepy baby.
  • Dress in neutral tones. Soft colours photograph beautifully and keep the focus on your connection. My favourite is to stick to creams for your session, mix in a variety of textures for family members.
  • Relax and enjoy it. Newborn sessions are slow-paced for a reason. I’ll guide everything so you can just soak in the sweetness.

You don’t need to worry about posing, props, wraps or outfits for baby. Everything is taken care of for you. The goal is to make the experience as calm and enjoyable as possible for your family.

Wrapping It Up

If your due date is coming up soon, now’s the perfect time to reach out and reserve your newborn session. Booking early ensures that when your baby arrives, all you have to do is send me a quick message and we’ll find the perfect date together.

These early days go by in a blur, but the memories you’ll hold from your newborn photos will last for years — the tiny fingers, the sleepy smiles, the love you felt in those very first weeks.
